La Chasse. Grade 4 (EQ 10). Performance: 2’35’’

This fast-paced piece is packed with excitement and challenges for skilled musicians. The use of artificial harmonics in glissando and ponticello tremolo, combined with punctuated accents and an urging accelerando, creates a great sense of anticipation that is only resolved by the main theme. This feeling of a frantic chase is further enhanced by the unsettling accompaniment parts and a fast bass line with quirky harmonies and rhythm. The xylophone adds to the character of the piece, although it is not essential. The many details and complex sonorities in each bar, as well as the wide range of articulations and techniques required, make this piece best suited for more developed players. They will need to master fast and constant changes between spiccato and legato, as well as techniques like ricochet, glissandi, and natural and artificial harmonics. Despite the challenges, this is a fun and fast-paced piece that is sure to be a hit with audiences.
